The rainforest is home to an incredible variety of fungi. The moisture combined with the ever replenished biomass as food-source ensures a healthy fungus network, often stretching for miles across huge stretches of land.
There is much evolving research on the role of fungi in the rainforest ecosystem. The symbiotic relationship between fungi and plants and the important role of mycelium is becoming better understood. It might be that in addition to bartering water to trees in exchange for sugars, it provides an “underground jungle telegraph” connecting wide-spread areas.
